Trust Your Instinct: My Health Status Update Ι Lupus Rebel
Here’s another great post from one of our Lupus Journey warriors, Dr. Connie Jeon.  She recently had a life-threatening health scare that was initially attributed to a lupus flare. Because of this misdiagnosis, identifying and treating the actual problem was delayed, with significant consequences.  It turns out her illness was drug-induced, and once she was taken-off the drug, she had a rapid recovery.  She had to go to a different doctor to get the correct diagnosis.  He probably saved her life.

What are the lessons here?  1) Don’t assume every ailment is related to your lupus.  2) Drugs have dangerous, sometimes life-threatening side-effects.  3) Take ownership of your health.  If what your doctor is saying doesn’t make sense, or your health gets worse under his care, seek a second, third or fourth opinion if necessary.

Why Getting the Right Amount of Sleep is Essential Ι Lupus Foundation of America
Sleep plays an important role in our physical health.  Sleep is the time when our bodies heal and repair themselves.  Sleep deficiency is linked to many health conditions and diseases, yet millions of people don’t get enough.  In 1942, less than 8% of the population was getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night.  In 2017, that number was almost 50%.  Sleep quality is an important as quantity.  Sleep needs to be recognized for its critical role in our health, and prioritized in our lives.

Goldman Sachs Asks In Biotech Research Report: ‘Is Curing Patients A Sustainable Business Model?’ Ι CNBC
“The potential to deliver ‘one shot cures’ is one of the most attractive aspects of gene therapy, genetically-engineered cell therapy and gene editing. However, such treatments offer a very different outlook with regard to recurring revenue versus chronic therapies… While this proposition carries tremendous value for patients and society, it could represent a challenge for genome medicine developers looking for sustained cash flow.”  Compelling read on why it’s more profitable to treat symptoms instead of curing diseases.

Too Many Meds?  America’s Love Affair With Prescription Medication Ι Consumer Reports
“More than half of us now regularly take a prescription medication—four, on average…  Americans take more pills today than at any other time in recent history… and far more than people in any other country…
Still, many Americans—and their physicians—have come to think that every symptom, every hint of disease requires a drug, says Vinay Prasad, M.D., an assistant professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. “The question is, where did people get that idea? They didn’t invent it,” he says. “They were spoon-fed that notion by the culture that we’re steeped in.”  It’s a culture, say the experts we consulted, encouraged by intense marketing by drug companies and an increasingly harried healthcare system that makes dashing off a prescription the easiest way to address a patient’s concerns.”

Bad Diets Are Responsible For More Deaths Than Smoking, Global Study Finds Ι The Salt
“These findings may serve as a reminder that when it comes to ending hunger and improving health, people don’t just need food. They need nourishment. If you fill up on a diet of packaged snacks made from refined-carbohydrates and sugary sodas, you may get the calories you need, but those calories will put you on a path toward disease.”
